Removing broken tap from brass work piece

Broken 3mm carbon tap clearly visible on left. Not sure if this would work on HSS? Probably...

Clearer view, at bottom.

The recommended way is to boil the work piece in a concentrated solution of alum - cheapest is swimming pool alum.

Starting to boil in an aluminium container.

On the boil, discolouration and bubbles from the slowly dissolving tap.

It worked like a charm - the tap was reduced enough in size to fall out of the hole after an hour or two. The brass was completely unaffected.

I'd known you could do something like this, but not sure of the details. Google, as always, is your friend. Now I can carry on where I left off two years ago.
